The castle and the lemon houses

Torri del Benaco

A perfect harbour, a Scaliger castle with its eighteenth-century lemon house, and the ferry that cuts across the lake to the Brescia shore.

Torri del Benaco has one of the loveliest harbours on the lake: small, enclosed among the houses, with the Scaliger Castle of 1383 towering over it on one side. The wooden boats sit inside it as if in a courtyard.

Inside the castle there is a rarity: an eighteenth-century lemon house still in operation, with its stone pillars and the boards that close in the plants during winter. It is the living testimony of a cultivation that for centuries made the fortune of this shore, when Garda's lemons travelled as far as Russia.

From here also departs the ferry to Toscolano-Maderno, the only one that crosses the lake with cars: in half an hour you reach the Brescia shore, skipping hours of winding roads.

What to see

01

Scaliger Castle

Battlements, towers and a view that embraces the harbour. It houses the castle museum and the hall of rock engravings.

02

The castle's lemon house

An eighteenth-century lemon greenhouse still in operation: pillars, terraces and the scent of citrus in winter.

03

The ferry to Maderno

It crosses the lake with cars on board. The finest (and fastest) way to pass from the Verona shore to the Brescia one.

Torri del Benaco

The Belfiore tip

If you would like to see the Brescia shore in a day, take the ferry here: the crossing is already an excursion in itself.

Belfiore Park Hotel

We'll be waiting for you on the jetty

Stay in Brenzone and reach this and the other spots on the lake, even by water.
