Peschiera is the point where the lake ends and becomes a river: here the Mincio is born. And it is also one of the most impressive military fortifications in Italy: a star-shaped Venetian fortress, with bastions, canals and drawbridges, inscribed since 2017 in the UNESCO World Heritage list together with the other defensive works of the Serenissima.

You walk along the bastions, pass beneath the monumental gates (Porta Verona, Porta Brescia), skirt the canals where the lake water flows in and encircles the entire old town. Within the walls, the village is lively and intimate.

From here also starts the Mincio cycle path, which descends towards Mantua for some forty almost entirely flat kilometres, along the river.
