Gargnano has remained what it always was: a fishing village with three little harbours, houses on the water and no desire to transform itself. D.H. Lawrence lived here in 1912 and wrote about it in Twilight in Italy: he describes exactly the village you still see today.

The 14th-century cloister of San Francesco, with capitals carved into citrus leaves, is a reminder that lemons arrived here with the friars. The lemon houses — in Villa and Bogliaco — are still standing, some restored and open to visitors.

On the lakefront, Villa Feltrinelli, in Art Nouveau style and overlooking the water, and Palazzo Bettoni in Bogliaco with its terraced Italian garden. Every September, the historic sails of the Centomiglia regatta fill the gulf.
