The historic capital of the Riviera, with the longest lakeside promenade on Lake Garda and a late-Gothic cathedral overlooking the water.
For centuries Salò was the capital of the Magnifica Patria, the federation of the communities of the riviera under Venice: you can still see it in the architecture, in the palaces, in the fifteenth-century Town Hall.
The lakefront promenade is the longest on the lake — over three kilometres of walkway along the water, in a sheltered gulf where Garda seems almost motionless. The late-Gothic Duomo has a façade left rough and unfinished, and within it works by Romanino and Zenon Veronese.
Salò is also the town where Gasparo da Salò was born, among the first violin makers in history. And, in a far darker chapter, the one that gave its name to the Italian Social Republic in 1943.
