A few kilometres from the lake, one of the most imposing fortresses in Lombardy and a house-museum waiting to be discovered.
Lonato is not on the lake — it lies a few kilometres inland — but it is well worth the detour. The Rocca Visconteo-Veneta is one of the largest and best-preserved fortifications in Lombardy: walls, towers, a keep and a panorama that stretches from the morainic hills all the way to Garda.
Within the complex stands the Casa del Podestà: the historic residence of senator Ugo Da Como, left exactly as he lived in it, with a library of more than fifty thousand volumes and furniture, paintings and objects all in their place. It is a time capsule, and one of the most fascinating and least known visits in the area.
