Gardone is dominated by the Vittoriale degli Italiani: the citadel that Gabriele d'Annunzio built around himself, and in which he had himself buried. Inside are the villa crammed with objects, the open-air theatre, the mausoleum, and — incredible but true — the prow of the ship Puglia set into the garden, and the aircraft in which he flew over Vienna hanging in a pavilion. It is excessive, theatrical, unforgettable.

A short distance away, the Heller Botanical Garden: a hectare of plants from every continent — bamboo, ferns, water lilies, agaves — with contemporary sculptures scattered throughout the vegetation.

Il lungolago, ottocentesco e signorile, è una passeggiata tra ville liberty e palme.
