Intact Scaliger walls, a Venetian harbour with its old customs house, and the first town in Italy to win municipal self-government.
Lazise still has its complete ring of walls, with its Scaliger towers and gates: you enter the town passing beneath an archway, just as people did in the fourteenth century. In 983 it was the first municipality in Italy to be granted the right of autonomy by Emperor Otto II: a small republic on the lake.
The little harbour is a masterpiece: enclosed within the walls, with the Dogana Veneta — the ancient arsenal of the Serenissima, where galleys were built and armed — and the little church of San Nicolò with its Romanesque frescoes.
Beyond the walls lies the morainic countryside with its vineyards; within, alleyways, little squares and the Scaliger castle set in its private park.
