A village wedged between rock and water, home to the northernmost terraced lemon groves in the world.
Limone is wedged between the cliff and the lake: there was no room, so they made it for themselves. The terraced lemon houses — stone walls, soaring pillars, wooden boards that sealed off the plants in winter — are the northernmost in the world where citrus was ever cultivated on a commercial scale. The Limonaia del Castèl has been restored and can be visited: an agricultural architecture that resembles a temple.
The old town is a tangle of alleys and stairways descending to the little harbour, the houses pressed one against another. Until the 1930s it could be reached only by boat: the road, the Gardesana Occidentale, was carved into the rock with tunnels and openings sheer above the water.
A curiosity: the inhabitants of Limone are famous throughout the world for a genetic mutation — apolipoprotein A-1 Milano — which protects the arteries and has been studied by cardiologists for decades.
