Il territorio
Where the lake becomes a fjord

Riva del Garda

The northern tip of Lake Garda, enclosed by sheer cliffs: an Austro-Hungarian town beneath the Brenta Dolomites.

At Riva the lake changes its face: the mountains close in, the cliffs plunge sheer into the water and Garda comes to resemble a fjord. This is the northernmost tip, already in Trentino, and you can feel it: Austro-Hungarian squares, Habsburg palaces, a Central European air that is nowhere to be found at the southern end of the lake.

Overlooking the harbour stands the Apponale Tower, 34 metres tall, which you can climb for the view. Beside it, the Rocca, surrounded by water and today a museum. And above it all, the Venetian Bastione of 1508, clinging to the mountain, reachable on foot or by a panoramic lift carved into the rock.

A few minutes away, the Varone waterfall: ninety metres of water inside a gorge, with walkways that lead into the ravine. And all around, cliffs, trails and via ferrata routes.

What to see

01

The Bastione

A Venetian fortress clinging to the cliff, with a panoramic lift. From up there you can see halfway down the lake.

02

The Varone waterfall

Ninety metres of water within a gorge, with walkways that lead into the rock. A few minutes from the centre.

03

The Apponale Tower

Thirty-four metres above the harbour: climb it and take in the whole of Alto Garda at a glance.

Riva del Garda

The Belfiore tip

Go to the Bastione an hour before sunset: the light streams straight into the fjord and the lake turns orange.
