A plateau 350 metres sheer above the water, with the most vertiginous panoramic terrace on the lake.
Tremosine is not on the lake: it is above the lake. A plateau of eighteen hamlets suspended at 350 metres, with the cliff plunging sheer into the water. The village of Pieve is home to the famous Terrazza del Brivido: an iron balcony overhanging the void, one of the most spectacular — and dizzying — viewpoints in Europe.
You climb up via the Strada della Forra, carved through a very narrow gorge: Winston Churchill called it “the eighth wonder of the world” and Hitchcock used it as a set. It is a mile and a half of hairpin bends within the rock, with the sky appearing only in slivers.
